The short version. Murmur does not collect anything. There is no account, no server run by us, and no analytics. Your voice and the text produced from it stay on your computer, and neither is ever sent anywhere.
What we collect
Nothing. Murmur has no account system, no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporting and no advertising identifiers. We do not operate a server that Murmur talks to, so there is no place for information about you to be sent even in principle.
Your audio
When you trigger the gesture, Murmur records from your microphone into memory and a temporary file on your own computer. That audio is passed to a speech recognition program that also runs on your computer, and is discarded once the text has been produced. It is never uploaded, never retained after the session, and never used to improve any model.
Your transcribed text
The recognised text is placed on your clipboard for the moment it takes to paste it into the application you were using, and your previous clipboard contents are then restored. Murmur does not keep a history of what you dictated. Nothing is written to a log or a database.
Microphone access
Murmur needs access to your microphone to do its job, and records only while you have explicitly started a recording with the gesture. It does not listen in the background, and there is no wake word.
Keyboard access
To detect the trigger gesture, Murmur observes modifier key presses system-wide. It looks only at whether a modifier key was tapped twice. Key presses are not recorded, stored or transmitted, and Murmur does not act as a keylogger.
What is stored on your computer
Murmur keeps a folder in your user directory containing:
- Your settings, such as gesture timings and interface language.
- The speech recognition model file, downloaded once on first run.
- A diagnostic log of application events, which does not contain your audio or transcribed text.
All of it stays on your machine. Deleting the application and that folder removes everything Murmur has ever stored.
Network use
Murmur makes exactly one kind of network request: downloading the speech recognition model, once, from a public model hosting service. Nothing about you is included in that request. After it completes, Murmur functions with no network connection at all.
The application also runs a small web server bound to your own machine (127.0.0.1) to display its settings window. It is not reachable from other devices or from the internet.
Children
Murmur is a general-purpose utility and is not directed at children. As it collects no information from anyone, it collects none from children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the revised version will be posted on this page with a new date above. Since the application collects nothing, any change is likely to be a clarification rather than a change in practice.
